The Zhangjinggao Yangtze River Bridge, a vital link connecting the cities of Zhangjiagang in Suzhou, Jingjiang in Taizhou, and Rugao in Nantong, is expected to open to traffic by 2028. Once operational, the bridge will significantly shorten travel time among the three cities and strengthen connectivity along the Yangtze River industrial corridor, injecting fresh momentum into Yangtze River Delta integration.
This world-class suspension bridge is making headlines with six world records and six global firsts in engineering innovation. One of its most striking features is the 350-meter-tall south main tower, equivalent to a 125-story building. It will become the tallest suspension bridge tower in the world. Construction of the south tower is progressing and is expected to top out by the end of this year.
The bridge also pioneers a world-first composite structure combining steel box and concrete-filled steel tubes. This hybrid design reduces the tower's weight by 50 percent compared to traditional concrete, improving strength and construction efficiency. The innovation marks a major leap in the industrialization of bridge-building in China.
