During Chinese New Year, Shazhou Symmetrical Paper Cutting, a Suzhou-level intangible cultural heritage item, is a cherished tradition in Zhangjiagang's Ximen community. Every year, as the festive season approaches, residents gather to express their hopes and blessings through the intricate art of paper cutting.

The craft involves folding paper and carefully cutting or carving out various patterns to create symmetrical designs. Rooted in the delicate aesthetics of the Jiangnan water towns, Shazhou paper cutting is known for its refined techniques and elegant expression, earning it widespread admiration among locals.

"Paper cutting is a signature activity in our community before Chinese New Year," said Xu Qiuru from the Ximen Community Paper Cutting Team, "Every year, we invite residents to join in and experience the charm of this traditional art."

Over time, the Ximen community has embraced innovation to keep this heritage alive and relevant. Modern elements have been integrated into the materials, techniques, and colors used in paper cutting. Designs now often feature festival celebrations, notable figures, and urban landmarks, bringing contemporary themes into the centuries-old craft.

Last year, for example, the Ximen Community Paper Cutting Team created a series of works featuring Sheng Lihao's victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics and gifted the pieces to him as a tribute to his achievement. This effort showcased this traditional art's enduring vitality and adaptability in the modern world.
