In an effort to promote the rich cultural heritage of the Yangtze River and its surrounding regions, one of the sub-events of the 2023 Yangtze River Culture Festival, the Folk Culture Market, was held in Zhangjiagang from Oct 19 to 22.

The market, focusing on the distinctive cultures of the 13 provincial-level regions along the Yangtze River, aimed to provide visitors with an immersive experience and teach them more about the diverse traditions and customs that have thrived in the region.

Zhu Suping, chief designer of the market, said there are four main sections: human culture, goods, performances, and interactive activities. These sections included nearly 100 stands showcasing an array of cultural heritage items, such as the traditional clothing and makeup of the Qianhu Miao people from Guizhou, Tibetan Thangka paintings, and the art of dough sculpture from Qianjiang, Hubei.

Furthermore, the market featured a special area presenting a wide range of cultural shows from various regions along the Yangtze River. In addition to local performances like Suzhou Pingtan and Heyang folk songs, the market hosted activities such as the Bai ethnic group's folk songs, Sichuan Opera face-changing and fire-breathing, and Hubei drum performances.
