The 2023 "Tangqiao Cup" China-Japan Professional Go Challenge kicked off in Tangqiao town, Zhangjiagang, Suzhou, Jiangsu province on Aug 12.

The tournament, featuring a 5-on-5 team format, was held from Aug 12 to 14. Chinese and Japanese Go players engaged in three rounds of matches before the champion was determined, said Ding Hongbo, secretary-general of the Zhangjiagang board game association.

In addition to competitive matches, the event also featured visits to major cultural landmarks in Zhangjiagang for both Chinese and Japanese participants. Landmarks included the Zhangjiagang Museum, Huangsipu Site, and Tianzhuang Ancient Street. The combination of the tournament and cultural exploration was aimed at bolstering the city's cultural influence.

Representing Japan in the competition was the Kansai Ki-in, one of Japan's two major Go associations. The head of the Kansai Ki-in, Yuki Satoshi, who participated in Sino-Japanese Go exchange activities in Zhangjiagang 27 years ago, invited Chinese players to Japan to foster friendships through the game.

The 16th Tangqiao Go Culture Festival was also held in the town. It featured various events, including a senior Go competition and a campus Go team tournament.
