Three port companies in Zhangjiagang, a county-level city in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, recently made the list of Jiangsu's top 20 port companies.
One of the companies, Jiangsu Port Group, has a subsidiary in Zhangjiagang. Zhangjiagang Port Group has been operating Zhangjiagang Port, one of the first 14 coastal ports China opened up, since 1982. The port can handle 150,000-metric-ton ships and has an annual throughput of 70 million tons of cargo.
Major commodities transported through Zhangjiagang port include timber, coal, ore, containers, and break-bulk cargo.
Zhangjiagang Haili Wharf was also on the list. Established in 1997, the company has 12 10,000-ton wharfs and 21 berths. It mainly handles raw materials and products for Shagang Group, a large steel company.
Zhangjiagang Win Hanverky Container Terminal Co Ltd started operating in 1992 and now has 380,000 square meters of container yards that can hold 40,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containers. It has opened many navigation lines, including some to Japan and South Korea.
