Industrial parks and enterprises based in Zhangjiagang, a county-level city in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, have been increasing green development efforts as the city works to prevent pollution and preserve the environment.
The Dongsha Chemical Industrial Park, which was urged to shut down due to the heavy pollution it produced, is now home to a number of projects related to emerging industries such as 3D printing, according to Xu Jin, deputy head of Nanfeng town where the industrial park is located.
The industrial park has an annual output of 1.5 billion yuan ($235.76 million) and is expected to open more new workshops to attract intelligent manufacturing enterprises, added Xu.
Jiangsu Shagang Group, a Zhangjiagang-based steel product manufacturer, has invested 8.16 billion yuan over the past few years to deal with pollution. Last September, it put into operation a production line that can grind steel slag into powder to reduce solid waste discharge. The steel powder can later be used for cement or concrete production to generate economic benefits.
To date, the group has processed about 9.15 million metric tons of steel slag and built more than 100 hectares of green space.
Cai Jianfeng, mayor of Zhangjiagang, said the city will focus on developing industries with low energy consumption, low pollution, and higher value added, such as integrated circuits, semiconductors, biomedicine, medical equipment, and new energy.
