Mid-Autumn Festival benefit in Taicang
Residents in Taicang, Jiangsu province, celebrated Mid-Autumn Festival by attending a special temple benefit.
The festival fell on Sept 27 this year. On the eve of the festival, a charity auction was held at the Tongjue Temple, a 600-year-old monastery built during Emperor Yongle's reign in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Monks at the temple gave performance reflecting their farming practices, which constitutes a major part of the Zen Buddhism. Volunteers also gave performances called Hua Hao Yue Yuan Ye, meaning the night of blooming flowers and full moon in Chinese.
Works of calligraphy, Qingtian stone carvings and Yixing clay teapots, featuring elements of Buddhist culture, were displayed for auction.
The event raised 90,000 yuan ($14,119) in total. The money will be used for charity purpose.
In the evening, 10 underprivileged students in Fuqiao town - the location of the temple - each received a donation of 1,000 yuan from the temple.
