Binhu improves recycling of construction waste

Updated: 2019-11-27

The Huli Construction Waste Disposal Plant in Binhu district, the biggest such disposal site in Wuxi, recently began operating. It uses advanced recycling technology to turn waste into usable materials.

The disposal plant is designed to deal with 320,000 tons of construction waste per year, which should rise to 1,000 tons per day after the plant is developed further. This will meet all of Wuxi's disposal needs. The plant is currently capable of handling 300 tons per day, which is expected to increase to 500 tons in the near future.

"Old landfill sites can't deal with growing waste from construction and renovation projects on new buildings," said the head of the district's urban management bureau, “and the traditional method isn't exactly environmentally friendly.”

"320,000 tons of construction waste requires at least 30 mu (2 hectares) of land and will form a 10-meter pile at a landfill site. This will result in limited land resources and harm to the environment."

According to employees at the disposal plant, construction waste delivered to the plant will be sorted automatically by advanced machinery. The sorted concrete, bricks, ceramics, and other items will be crushed and ground to form recycled aggregates and then be processed into recycled bricks.

Due to their high level of porosity and water permeability, recycled bricks are mostly used for paving sidewalks. Rainwater can pass through the bricks and into the ground more quickly, reducing the threat of waterlogging in cities.
