Binhu hosts summit on improving water environment

Updated: 2019-11-13

A summit forum on how to improve the river chief system for protecting and improving the water environment was held in Binhu district, Wuxi, Jiangsu province on Nov 12.

It is the first professional forum to be held on governing the water environment in the district.

Nearly 59 percent of Binhu is made up of water. The district houses 207.18 square kilometers of Taihu Lake, as well as 250 river channels. Out of the 15 main rivers running into Taihu Lake in Jiangsu province, two are located in Binhu.

Water governance is highly important to the district government, which introduced the river chief system of appointing people be held personally accountable for any environmental damage of water bodies they oversee.

A number of experts from Chinese universities and institutes participated in the forum, exploring how to use new technology to improve water quality in the district and discussing management systems such as the river chief system.

Moving forward, the local government will cooperate with experts and water treatment enterprises to ensure that every river in the district will be protected.
