Chinese disaster film The Captain topped the Chinese mainland box office from Oct 5 to 13, according to the China Movie Data Information Network.

The film had grossed 2.43 billion yuan ($344.53 million) as of Oct 13 after fourteen days in theaters and has received widespread acclaim.

The movie is based on a real event that occurred on May 14, 2018, when Sichuan Airlines pilot Liu Chuanjian managed a miraculous emergency landing.

Shooting started on Jan 3 at the Wuxi Movie Base and took more than three months. A model of an Airbus A319, the aircraft Liu was piloting during the event, was built for the movie.

The Wuxi Movie Base, dubbed "Huallywood", is located in Binhu district and is already home to 500 film companies. Around 400 movies and TV dramas have been filmed there.

The Wuxi Movie Base features a variety of studios and hopes to become an important part of the film and TV industry in China. [[Photo from WeChat account wxbhfb]
