Wuxi was a cradle of civilization south of the Yangtze, and dates back to the end of the Shang Dynasty, BC 1046. Wuxi ushered into a new era of liberation, on April 23, 1949, and developed its suburbs in 1950.

Its Mashan office opened in August 1980 and the Mashan district was established in 1988, with the village of Wangzhuang added to the new Wuxi district, and Hudai county added to the suburbs in March 1995. In December 2000, Mashan was removed from its jurisdiction and added to the Wuxi suburbs, then changed its name to the Binhu district.
