Aquarium launches 'brilliant' sardine display

Updated: 2016-04-12

Spectacular marine performances are currently underway at the Aqua Museum at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise in Japan as 50,000 sardines swim in a cherry blossom-themed aquarium.

Under pink lights, schools of sardines chase bails shaped like blooming cherry blossoms swaying in the wind.

The fantasy cherry show is set to run until April 5, according to the museum.

The aquarium launched the cherry-themed performance in 2014, to highlight the beauty and influence of Japan's national flower. Delicate and pink, they are deeply symbolic in Japanese culture – a symbol of spring, a time of renewal, and of the fleeting nature of life.
