Feng Gate

Updated: 2012-03-01

Feng Gate is located at the east of Suzhouand to the south of Xiang Gate. It was originally named after Fengyu Mountain. Since there were Yuzhuan Yufu fish (finless porpoises) in rivers nearby, it was also called Yuzhuan Gate and Yufu Gate. Based on the numerous ponds in surrounding areas, the gate was later renamed Feng Gate.

The gate was reconstructed many times throughout various dynasties. At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, a water gate was built and the arch over the gateway was reconstructed with the addition of a horizontal board with the inscription “Xiliu Qingying” (which translates to mean clear streams are nearby and add brilliance to the gateway). The arch over the gateway was demolished in the 25th year of the Republic of China. In the 1950s, the city gate was removed.
