In Suzhou are the Classic Lakes that are not only beautiful in their vastness and nature but hugely significant to China as a whole. A place, listed as an area of national importance, being the third largest freshwater lake in China. The views, thanks to an array of islands and peaks, are unmatched, and its history, ecology, life and significance are as vast as it is.

West Hill Scenic Zoneis a National Geological Park, an island, and offers the best views of the area. It is a retreat where life revolves around nature, where oranges and tea are grown and home to a thriving fishing industry. Its hilly surroundings finds houses, temples and bridges nestled in amongst trees and flowers, caves and gardens.

The cultural and historical importance of the East Hill Scenic Zone is far-reaching, with traces of ancient civilizations being discovered here. This is reflected in the many historical attractions that exist in this region. It is also home to arguably one of the most authentic working historical villages of Southern China.

The very fact that Sun Tzu wrote The Art of War here is enough to make Qionlong Mountain stand out. However, the stunning surroundings of bamboo groves intertwined by dense forests, offering unique variations of natural light, is inspiring. Ancient temples, the oldest in Suzhou, and hundreds of rare species of flora and fauna add to its riches. Natural springs abound in the Heavenly Pond Mountain and Flower Hill, home to both flowers and religious artefacts. The nature theme continues in the Tianping Mountain, home to 158 ancient maple trees, thus offering wonderful seasonal views. The legendary Lingyan Mountain Scenic Zone is another demonstration of nature and history co-existing together, where the palace and pagoda peer above treetops. Classic Lakes are of course home to a large number of crabs, and at Yangcheng Lake Tourism and Holiday Resort they are abundant both in number and in freshness. The clear water and reedy habitat are ideal for crabs.

The mountainous Stone Lake Scenic Zone in the Taihu lake region has wonderful rural scenery, relics and ruins and is an ideal place for those seeking lakes and mountains. Arguably one of the most interesting and unusual historical bridges in all of China is the stone Baodai bridge in the southeast of Suzhou. Its general location, by the Grand Canal, rural setting, and length makes this a must see.

The nature reserve Shanghu Wetland is home to over 60 species of birds, and has bamboo raft tours of the marshes where birdwatchers can get close to the natural habitats of the birds. Shajiabang is another reed marsh area that combines nature, with history, with life, with culture. The Revolution Museum and activity areas for kids are testament to the multi-faceted nature of the Classic Lakes.
