Oriental Energy (Zhangjiagang) New Materials Co Ltd has successfully launched its waste heat recovery system, which is expected to save the company about 10 million yuan ($1.38 billion) in annual energy costs.

Oriental Energy specializes in producing hydrogen energy, with an annual electricity consumption of 1 billion kilowatt-hours. The company generates a significant amount of steam during its production processes, but the previous equipment was not able to recover the heat, leading to a steam utilization rate of just 10 percent and resulting in substantial energy waste.

To address this issue, Oriental Energy partnered with Jiangsu Integrated Energy Service Company under State Grid to install a new waste heat recovery system, allowing the recovered superheated steam to drive a turbine and generate electricity, raising the plant's steam usage rate to 90 percent.

The system has an installed capacity of 4.5 megawatts, making it the largest of its kind in China's chemical industry. It is expected to generate 17.4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 12,200 tons.
