US company Amprius, a world-leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries, will set up a high energy density battery production and research and development base in Zhangjiagang, Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province.

Representing $700 million in investment, the base will be located in the Zhangjiagang High-tech Industrial Development Zone and is expected to produce 10 million lithium-ion batteries monthly after it starts operating. The batteries will be used in sectors including aviation, power transmission, and unmanned aerial vehicles.

During a signing ceremony for the project held on Jan 14, Wang Nianju, director of Amprius Hong Kong, said the comprehensive transport network and supporting facilities, as well as favorable business environment are the main factors why Amprius decided to set up the base in Zhangjiagang. The new production base will help the company further explore markets and expand capacity, he added.

Han Wei, Party secretary of Zhangjiagang, said the production base will inject fresh impetus to the building of a 100-billion-yuan ($14.76 billion) new energy industrial cluster in the city. He urged the government of Zhangjiagang High-tech Industrial Development Zone to provide efficient and comprehensive administrative services to aid the construction of the base.
