Two bird species, locustella certhiola and myophonus caeruleus, were spotted in Zhangjiagang, a county-level city in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, for the first time, local media reported.

With improvements in the natural environment, more wild animals have been showing up in Zhangjiagang in recent years, bringing new life to the city.

In 2021, a spoon-billed sandpiper, a critically endangered species, was observed in the coastal wetlands of Zhangjiagang.

In March, a scaly-sided merganser, a national first-class protected animal, was photographed again after first being observed in Zhangjiagang seven years ago.

In addition, the endangered Yangtze finless porpoise can often be seen in the Zhangjiagang section of the Yangtze River.

Zhangjiagang is currently home to 213 species of birds, including 21 new species found in the past five years, official statistics show.
