Changyinsha Modern Agricultural Demonstration Area in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province is now home to a variety of migratory birds thanks to the area's environmental protection and biodiversity conservation efforts.
Wang Yongxiang, a native of Changyinsha, is a photographer and environmental volunteer. Since 2019, he has begun to photograph the birds in the Changyinsha wetland, capturing images of more than 170 species of birds, including three species under first-class national protection in China.
"Everyone wants a well-preserved ecological environment, and the blue sky and clear water bring happiness to residents living in Changyinsha. A sound eco-environment is the most basic public good that benefits everyone. I'm so lucky to witness the environment in my hometown getting better and better," said Wang.
In recent years, Changyinsha has bolstered its Yangtze River conservation efforts, stopping over development. The area has implemented a river chief system, which names top local officials as river chiefs and makes them responsible for protecting water resources, controlling and preventing pollution, as well as restoring aquatic ecosystems. The water quality of major rivers in Changyinsha has been at or above the Grade III level, the third-highest level in the country's five-tier water quality system.
The improved ecological environment has attracted many birds to settle in Changyinsha, making the area a paradise for birds and animals, with the rich biodiversity resources becoming a calling card for the area.
"We will adhere to the path of green development that puts ecology first, making efforts to build a beautiful city with green mountains and fresh air. Efforts will also be made to strike a balance between bolstering biodiversity conservation and the tourism industry," said Ding Feng, a local official.
