A Wuxi Opera "Voyage to the East" will be staged at an art center in Zhangjiagang, a county-level city administered by Suzhou in East China's Jiangsu province on Oct 26.
The opera tells the story of Jianzhen who was a Chinese Buddhist monk in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). In 753, he embarked on a journey from Zhangjiagang to Japan to spread Buddhism. This was his last and only successful voyage to Japan after five failures.
Jianzhen is now regarded as a symbol of cultural exchange between China and Japan.
The opera will be performed by the Zhangjiagang Wuxi Opera Art Center, which was established in 1964 and has won multiple prizes.
