A workshop for a new hydrogen energy base being developed by CRRC (Suzhou) Hydrogen Power Technology Co Ltd, located in the Zhangjiagang Free Trade Zone (FTZ), recently started operating – while other parts of the facility are set to be completed by the end of the year.

Located in the Zhangjiang FTZ, situated in the county-level city of Zhangjiagang – administered by Suzhou in East China's Jiangsu province – the hydrogen energy base will cost a total of 4.2 billion yuan ($648 million) and be built in two phases.

A senior manager at CRRC (Suzhou) Hydrogen Power Technology said a headquarters building, test building, reactor and system incubations building – as well as a staff activity area – recently completed handover inspections.

On completion, the facility will have the capacity to produce 300 megawatts of hydrogen power annually. The second phase of the project is reportedly progressing steadily.

In recent years, Zhangjiagang has paid great attention to its hydrogen industry development, attracting more than 30 hydrogen-related companies that specialize in hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, hydrogen fuel cells and components manufacturing.

In addition, the city has reportedly developed a complete hydrogen energy economic ecosystem.

It set up a hydrogen energy fund for CRRC (Suzhou) Hydrogen Power Technology Co Ltd and established industrial platforms and developers, such as the Suzhou Hydrogen Energy Industry Innovation Center.
