Zhangjiagang foreign trade up 12.3% in Q1

The total foreign trade of Zhangjiagang, Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, grew 12.3 percent year-on-year to 57.06 billion yuan ($8.87 billion) in the first three months of this year, according to statistics released by the city's customs authorities.

 

The private sector, which already makes up the bulk of Zhangjiagang's foreign trade, continued to play a bigger role by bringing in 33.81 billion yuan in the first three months, up 12.3 percent year-on-year and accounting for 59.3 percent of the city's total imports and exports.

 

Foreign-invested companies also saw a fast recovery in imports and exports, with total foreign trade expanding 19.5 percent year-on-year to 17.18 billion yuan in the same period.

 

The United States replaced Australia as Zhangjiagang's largest trade partner last October, with foreign trade with the US surging to 10.04 billion yuan in the first quarter of this year, growing by 30.9 percent year-on-year, while trade with the RCEP (Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) regions was valued at 24.96 billion yuan from January to March, an increase of 19.4 percent year-on-year.

 

Mechanical and electrical products, textiles and garments, and steel products were Zhangjiagang's main exports during the period, accounting for 71.2 percent of all the city's exports.
