Zhangjiagang in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province saw a robust recovery in its consumption sector during the five-day May Day holiday that ended on May 5, local news outlets reported on May 6.

"The city has started a series of campaigns in May to boost consumer spending, as the retail sector continues to rebound from cautious spending behavior caused by the COVID-19 pandemic," said a manager of a tourism company in Zhangjiagang.

On May 1 and 2, the city's Yonglian Agricultural Garden received more than 6,000 visitors a day, generating business income of 1.3 million yuan ($200,759), doubling that of the same period in 2019.

With the construction of a complete high-speed railway network, an increasing number of people have chosen to take high-speed trains to embark on a trip, with the daily number of railway passenger trips during the holiday period hitting a high level.

Large-scale shopping malls and supermarkets also witnessed a boom in sales revenue with the launch of the consumption promotion month. A wide range of themed activities, ranging from new product debuts to online-to-offline discounts, were held during the holiday.

Zhangjiagang also launched night tours to stimulate its night economy, which have helped the exploration of promotion and operation models, as well as public service and management methods, for the development of its nighttime economy.
