The county-level city of Zhangjiagang, East China's Jiangsu province plans to invest 1.25 billion yuan ($192.31 million) to improve the ecological environment of Shuangshan Island, as well as to upgrade its supporting transportation and tourism facilities, according to a local news report.
According to local authorities, the project is aiming to build the island into a cultural and tourism complex, a famous tourist resort in the Yangtze River Delta region, as well as a "green lung" for the city.
Shuangshan Island has long been hailed as Zhangjiagang's "treasure island" for its advantageous ecological resources and environment.
Due to the continuous efforts of the local government, the island has been focusing on bolstering its tourism development in recent years. A number of tourism projects were launched on the island last year, including a recreational vehicle camping park, theme park resorts, and boutique homestays.
Efforts were made to beautify its roads and watercourses, as well as to build five star-level tourist toilets last year.
Additionally, Shuangshan Island plans to build a big data center for smart tourism to improve its ticketing system, renovate its tourist center, as well as improve its tourism facilities to boost its night tourism.
