Yangshe town in Zhangjiagang, a county-level city in East China's Jiangsu province, launched its "toilet revolution" campaign in June to increase the number and improve the sanitation of toilets at tourist sites, with 27 toilets being renovated or built by the end of 2020, making the villages cleaner and more beautiful, according to a local news report on Feb 20.

On the east of Hexi Road, a modern toilet, featuring characteristics of Jiangnan-style water towns, has drawn people's attention.

"The renovated toilet on the east of Hexi Road has taken on an entirely new look, with the advanced technologies like facial recognition applied by the toilet having improved public services for people," said a local resident.

The toilets are not only spacious, clean, and tidy, but also equipped with music players, ventilation systems, vending machines, micro-fire stations, first-class facilities, and free wifi, according to a local official.

The campaign has expanded to improve public toilets in cities and build better private toilets in rural areas.
