The port city of Zhangjiagang in East China's Jiangsu province will bolster efforts to promote high-quality development through innovation, according to the government work report delivered at the annual session of the municipal people's congress on Jan 6.

Innovation is the primary driving force behind development, and Zhangjiagang has comprehensively improved its capability in scientific and technological innovation in the past few years.

"The city will build an 'Innovative Zhangjiagang' within three to five years, along with a batch of innovative counties and platforms," said Sun Dongliang, deputy director of the city's science and technology bureau.

Measures will be carried out to accelerate its pace in promoting the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries, as well as in facilitating digital and intelligent transformations. A total of 100 key projects related to smart manufacturing will be implemented this year, while 500 industrial enterprises will go online.

"While seizing the opportunities of digital industrialization, Zhangjiagang will accelerate the development of digital economy," said Wu Yangang, deputy director of the city's industrial and information technology bureau.

Efforts will also be made to enhance the city's core competitiveness by developing its eight leading industries, including new energy resources, digital economy, biological medicine, and high-end medical equipment. In addition, a batch of emerging industrial clusters has taken shape in Zhangjiagang.
