The container throughput of Zhangjiagang Port Group in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province surpassed 59.95 million metric tons in the first 11 months of 2020, growing by 3.1 percent year-on-year, local media outlets reported on Jan 8.

Zhangjiagang Port Group, which runs a public wharf in the city with the largest scale and most complete functions, undertakes the gathering and distribution business of wood, coal, minerals, and break-bulk cargo.

Due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic earlier last year, the Zhangjiagang government has rolled out an array of supportive measures to promote the business recovery of the port, which have contributed to its continuous growth.

Additionally, the city's maritime authorities cooperated with port enterprises and launched a coordination center, as well as opened a green channel to cargo ships, aiming to offer high-efficiency services to enterprises. With the support of the city's maritime bureau, Zhangjiagang Port received 745 ocean shipping cargo ships during the January to November period.

At the same time, the group has made great efforts to promote the green development of the port by adopting advanced technologies, such as electronic information. The port has also promoted the use of shore power to make its port greener and more environmentally-friendly.

Statistics show that by the end of August last year, all wharves in Zhangjiagang had adopted shore power, making Zhangjiagang Port the first port in Jiangsu that can supply high-voltage electricity to sea vessels, as well as container liners, inland vessels, and other types of vessels.
