Zhangjiagang, a port city along the Yangtze River in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, has made great achievements in improving its ecological environment and people's living conditions, according to officials at a news conference held on Dec 30.

In the past year, the city has laid out numerous plans to promote green development, combat pollution to ensure blue skies, as well as promote clean energy, with the goal of building a beautiful city. Efforts have also been made to protect and restore the Yangtze River's ecological environment.

Statistics show that as of Dec 29, the average concentration of PM2.5, fine particles that are hazardous to people's health, in Zhangjiagang last year was 33.6 micrograms per cubic meter of air, a decrease of 13.2 percent year-on-year. The proportion of days with fairly good air quality in the city reached 83.5 percent in 2020, which was 5 percent higher than the same period last year, the best results in recent years.

The city also launched a system to better monitor the changing conditions in rivers, lakes, and wetlands to prevent and control water pollution. The city has also continued to make efforts to reduce the discharge of industrial wastewater and sewage into the waterway.
