Zhangjiagang, a port city along the Yangtze River, has abundant rainfall and many rivers, as well as a number of ancient bridges. White walls, gray tiles, small bridges, and flowing streams are typical of Jiangnan water towns such as this.
Yangshe, located in the city, is one of the oldest towns in the Yangtze River and Taihu Lake basins and has a history of more than 1,730 years. It is home to some well-preserved ancient bridges in its old town.

Taiping Bridge, built during the reign of Emperor Guangxu (1871-1908) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1901), is located in Baijiaqiao village, Yangshe town. The 24.8-meter-long bridge was named Taiping because it means peace and tranquility in Chinese.
