Zhujiadang village in Zhangjiagang, a county-level city in Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province has made great efforts to lift itself out of poverty and pave the way for prosperity over the past 16 years, local media reported on June 4.

The village, located in the Zhangjiagang Bonded Zone, suffered from an underdeveloped transportation system in the past, which proved to be a major impediment to its social and economic development.

As the Chinese saying goes, building a road is the first step to becoming prosperous. The village doubled down on efforts to construct roads, which helped attract investment and promote industrial development. Poverty in the village ultimately ended in 2004. 

In recent years, the village has been accelerating rural revitalization and the construction of a livable countryside by boosting industrial development. The total industrial output value of enterprises above designated size in Zhujiadang stood at about 1 billion yuan ($141.11 million) last year.

The village is now home to more than 60 enterprises, including eight above designated size. A total of eight large enterprises set up operations in the village, which promoted its development.

In addition, it stepped up efforts to promote its unique resources and pushed forward agricultural restructuring. Modern agriculture in the village has maintained steady growth over the years.

This year, the village plans to renovate 190 hectares of rural land to promote "beautiful countryside" projects, which will benefit more than 600 villages after its completion.
