During the past three years, nearly 200 enterprises have participated in the plan and donated 8.2 million yuan ($1.34 million) to over 300 charity projects in the city and surrounding areas.

One such example of support from private enterprises is the free bus transportation service, which since 2013, has been provided to help transport the city's migrant workers to their hometowns ahead of the Spring Festival, benefiting more than 1,400 migrant workers.

With the support of local enterprises, a free Spring Festival family dinner is also held annually in Zhangjiagang to provide an opportunity for migrant workers to communicate with each other, form friendships in the city and feel at home.

Also receiving support from the private sector are the city's youth volunteers, who regularly bring warmth to students at migrant children schools by accompanying them to places around the city and watching movies together.

Since the city's many volunteers carry out a variety of activities on a daily basis, the local government has taken steps to ensure their safety cooperating with China Life Insurance Group to provide registered volunteers with free accident insurance and health insurance coverage while they carry out charity work. The plan covers compensation claims of up to 100,000 yuan ($16,415).

Volunteerism is regarded by many in China to be a symbol of a city’s civilization. Zhangjiagang's success in volunteer work has garnered much attention from other cities keen on establishing similar programs and strengthening their communities. From October 2014 to February 2015, the city welcomed a total of 159 delegations from cities around the country.

The city also hosted a national county-level campaign which saw 2,961 officials from around the country visit to learn about its achievements in building a civilized city. The participants said they were impressed by the city's efforts, including the work of the volunteers.
