The Wuxi Kiln Ruins Museum is situated where the ancient Grand Canal intersects with Bodu Port. It holds the distinction of being China's first museum dedicated to presenting the full history of brick and tile development in the country.
The museum, once a factory on Dayao Road, was renovated to display its extensive collection of ancient brick and tile artifacts. Its most valuable exhibit is the legendary golden bricks, a high-quality type of brick that was exclusively used in ancient imperial palaces.
The first-floor exhibition hall displays different types of bricks made in Wuxi, such as city wall bricks, square bricks, and tomb bricks. The second-floor features replicas of ancient bricks and tiles found throughout China, artifacts from diverse regions, and models of modern brick-making equipment, illustrating the historical development of Chinese bricks and tiles.
On the second floor of the museum, a corridor leads to a two-story building on the pier side. Since water tourism on the historic Grand Canal has begun, visitors can now access the museum either on foot or by boat.
The museum features main and cross-sectional exhibits of specific ancient kiln sites. It also offers interactive experiences where visitors can engage with the brick and tile manufacturing process, creating an engaging and inspiring display of ancient ruins.
