Origin
Folk songs and ballads performed in Wu dialect are commonly known as Wu Songs (Wuge), representing an important part of Wu culture. Originating from Southeast Jiangsu, this form of folk art reflects unique ethnic and regional traits, with a history spanning more than 3,200 years.
The East Meili region and its surroundings in Wuxi are some of the main hubs for Wu Songs. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911), performances like folk song duets have been especially popular in Dongting subdistrict as well as in Zhaqiao and Anzhen towns.
Category
