The Zhihetang medicinal paste preparation method was included in the third batch of national intangible cultural heritage items in 2011.
Origin
Zhihetang medicinal paste is a traditional Chinese medicine originating from Zhihetang, a time-honoured pharmacy founded in Jiangyin, Wuxi, in 1890 by Liu Baoyi, a famous physician of the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). It is mainly used as a winter tonic.
Features
The medicinal paste is specifically tailored to individual needs and available in numerous varieties. It uses either classical formulas or Liu Baoyi's well-established prescriptions, with modifications as necessary. Most prescriptions are developed by renowned contemporary TCM practitioners based on diagnosis. The composition and dosage are carefully customized according to the patient's region, age, constitution, and health status. Additionally, production follows traditional methods: raw materials are prepared using time-honoured techniques without any chemical additives. The process is carried out by experienced artisans, with each stage carefully inspected and overseen by senior pharmacists.
