During this season, the aroma of relu mooncakes, or freshly baked mooncakes, wafts through the city's streets. Among the flavors, meat mooncakes are most popular. Out of the oven, their flaky crust crumbles with each bite, while the savory filling is hot and juicy.
The Changjing mooncake from Jiangyin is also quite renowned, once serving as a tribute to the imperial court. Its traditional recipe features dozens of ingredients, with careful attention to technique and baking time. The crust has 50 or 60 layers.
