The Monsoon 600 megawatt wind power project, co-developed by Wuxi-based Envision Energy Co, has recently been fully connected to the grid in Laos. Clean electricity is now continuously supplied to the Vietnamese grid via cross-border transmission lines.
This project marks Laos' first large-scale wind power endeavor and establishes several records, such as being the largest single-unit project in Southeast Asia and Asia's first cross-border power transmission new energy project.
On April 15, China and Vietnam issued a joint statement, clearly expressing their intention to enhance collaboration in emerging sectors such as clean energy and green development. They also committed to jointly establishing a secure and stable industrial and supply chain.
Just four months later, this vision of collaboration has materialized.
The project is situated in Sekong and Attapeu provinces, Laos, with construction starting in March 2023. It features 133 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 4.5 MW, along with a booster station and associated collection and transmission lines. The project is expected to generate about 1.72 billion kilowatt-hours every year. Envision Energy oversees the construction, commissioning, and ongoing operation and maintenance of the wind turbines and grid.
"In Laos, this project addresses the power shortage in central Vietnam and supports the development of the local new energy industry, speeding up the 'battery of Southeast Asia' strategic goal. For the region, it creates a benchmark for regional energy links and introduces a new model for cross-border green electricity flow," said Phoutsakda, a local Lao official, expressing optimism about the bright future clean energy can bring.
