A concert commemorating the 130th anniversary of Wuxi-born musician Liu Tianhua's birth took place in Jiangyin, a county-level city in Wuxi, East China's Jiangsu province, on May 26.
Renowned erhu performer and educator Yu Hongmei, along with several outstanding young talents from the Central Conservatory of Music, paid tribute to Liu, a pioneer of modern Chinese music, with the sound of bow and strings in his hometown.
Led by Yu, nearly 10 classic erhu pieces composed by Liu were performed at the concert, alongside new pieces making their world premiere.

Among them, Melodic Strings of Plum Blossoms was specially composed in honor of the 130th anniversary of Liu's birth and drew inspiration from his Mei Lanfang Songbook. Strings of the Heart pays tribute to Liu and fellow erhu pioneer Ah Bing, carrying forward the rhythmic elements contained in their works.
"Holding this concert in Jiangyin serves as a tribute to masters of Chinese music and an affirmation of the spirit, culture, and tradition of Chinese music," said Yu.
This musical genius who emerged from Jiangyin dedicated his life to improving Chinese music, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity, folk and academia, China and the world, paving the way for the development of Chinese music.
