The fifth, or the final episode of A Touch of Wuxi, a micro-documentary series about Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province, has been released.
Titled "Valuing Education and Literature Flowing with the Fragrance of Books", this episode explores the city's commitment to education and literary pursuits.
"The sound of wind, rain, and reading, all enter the ears; concerned about family, state, and world affairs." This couplet, hanging in the city's Donglin Academy, has been widely spread, inspiring scholars for centuries and bearing witness to the flourishing cultural heritage of Wuxi.
Established in 1111, the Donglin Academy served as a renowned center of learning where the distinguished scholar Yang Shi delivered his lectures. Five hundred years later, it evolved into a spiritual home for scholars from all over the country.
With strong support from local merchants, the establishment of the Wuxi National Studies Institute in 1920 marked the beginning of higher education in Wuxi.
Since the early 20th century, many young talents from the city have ventured overseas to study Western culture and technology, bringing back their knowledge to benefit their homeland.
The profound cultural and educational heritage spanning thousands of years seems to permeate every inch of Wuxi's soil. The brilliance of these talented individuals emerging from the streets and alleys of Wuxi illuminates the city and profoundly influences the historical progress of Chinese society.
