"How is that elderly woman doing now?" Horace Beacham, an English teacher from the United States, inquired when the award presenters from the public security bureau and a Good Samaritan fund in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, visited him on Jan 20.
Three days ago, during his riverside run, Beacham witnessed an older woman struggling in the water and calling for help. Without hesitation, he rushed to grasp her arm, preventing her from sinking further. With the timely arrival of the police and others, they collectively rescued the older woman from the water.
After the intense rescue, Beacham felt relieved and resumed his run. "Running helps me clear my mind," he explained. "If faced with a similar situation in the future, I would react the same way, as the people of Wuxi have always been kind to me."
Having visited China for the first time at 18, Beacham has held a favorable view of the country. Since 2015, he has chosen to work and reside in Wuxi, where he has made his home for the past decade. Beacham appreciates Wuxi for its balanced lifestyle - not too big or too small, with a just right pace. He has grown fond of the city and hopes to continue living there.
Currently employed as an English teacher at a foreign language educational institution in the city, Beacham is beloved by his students.
