Fishermen in Ehu town, Wuxi, Jiangsu province, began hauling in their first net of black carp, which is popular among locals during Spring Festival, marking the opening of this year's black carp culture festival on Dec 30.

The fish is known as the Ganlu black carp, which literally means "sweet dew black carp" in Chinese. People living in Wuxi and neighboring areas have a tradition of eating the fish during the most important festival in China.

Local fishermen have been farming the fish since 1924 and are usually farmed in clean ponds and fed snails and clams.

Black carp in Ehu town are farmed over an area of 110 hectares, and 1.15 million kilograms of the fish are expected to be produced this year. About 1 million kg of the fish are expected to be caught and served to locals before the Spring Festival. The sale price will rise this year due to the COVID-19 epidemic, according to local fishermen.

Locals who wish to buy black carp can visit Ehu town or order online on the Chao Yang Dao Jia ("朝阳到家") app developed by Wuxi Sunny Group.
