Wuxi in East China's Jiangsu province is known for a type of wood engraving known as "zhima".

Unlike standard engravings, Wuxi zhima features an extra layer of paint after the engraving has been monochrome printed. Most of the works are used to pray for good fortune.

Jia Fang, a well-known art teacher from Wuxi's Huaxia Tianyi Bilingual School, has been working to promote the skills and works of wooden carvings such as Wuxi zhima to primary school students for years.

Jia believed that folk culture, boasting unique charm developed from ancient people and where they lived, is worth protection and developing no matter how time passes.

Jia said that with the changes in society, the old version of Wuxi zhima featuring various characters of ancient Chinese fairy tales have disappeared. Jia would hence like to pass down the traditional art to students and preserve this piece of culture.
