The Mashan Yangmei is a distinctive local fruit grown in Mashan town, Binhu district, Wuxi, which is hugely popular in the summer.
Yangmei, also known as waxberry or red bayberry, is native to East Asia, mainly in south-central China where it has been grown for at least 2000 years.
Thanks to the town's ideal growing conditions, Mashan Yangmei stands out from others in Chinese areas for its large size, small core and rich flavor.
It was granted an Agro-product Geographical Indication by the country's agricultural department this May, which will help to further popularize the fruit.
