The water quality in Taicang, a county-level city in East China's Jiangsu province, ranked first in the province from January to May, the Department of Ecology and Environment of Jiangsu Province announced on June 25.

This was largely due to the implementation of a series of measures rolled out by authorities, including conducting the river chief system.

The city formulated 10 rules to implement the system, introduced more than 70,000 patrols along its rivers, and established a coordinated treatment system to improve the water quality of its 58 trans-boundary rivers.

Taicang also implemented a series of measures, including holding back pollution sources, dredging, riverbank restoration and ecological restoration, completing rainwater and sewage diversion renovation in its 50 residential communities, domestic sewage treatment in 10 villages, and dredging 111 kilometers of river courses in 2022.

The city has also conducted an examination of its sewage treatment facilities to improve their management this year.

The amount of the city's sewage disposal in 2022 was 75.53 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 9.6 percent.
