Taicang Port in East China's Jiangsu province was ranked 25th in the list of the top 100 Ports Worldwide in Container Throughput in 2021 recently released by Lloyd's List.
The port handled 7.04 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of container throughput in 2021, up 35 percent year-on-year - the highest growth rate among the world's top 100 container ports.
The port has been the first in the Yangtze River area in terms of container throughput for 12 consecutive years and the first in the province for four consecutive years.
More than 140,000 vessels, 120,000 people and over 2 million vehicles called at the port in 2021. More than $40 billion worth of cargo was transported through the port during the period.
The port’s container throughput totaled 4.46 million TEUs from January to July, rising 15.4 percent year-on-year, and is expected to hit 8 million TEUs by the end of this year.
Authorities said at a conference held on Aug 16 that they will accelerate the construction of logistics infrastructure and establish intermodal transport modes to promote the integrated development of port, industries and city.
In addition, Taicang will speed up the port's transformation from a logistics port to a logistics and trading port. The port's goal is to handle 10 million TEUs of container throughput and 300 million metric tons of cargo throughput by 2025.
