A glimpse of some ICH in Taicang

June 11 marks Cultural and Natural Heritage Day. Taicang, a county-level city in East China's Jiangsu province has in recent years been actively promoting the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage (ICH).

Here are six ICH items in Taicang. 

Swaying boat

Swaying boat (danghuchuan in Chinese) is a folk dance which is popular in Liuhe town, Taicang. The town has abundant fishery resources and a majority of local residents make a living through fishing. The dance is created by fishermen and named as such because the boat props are always swaying during the performance. The dance has been listed as a Suzhou municipal ICH.

Dalianxiang

Dalianxiang is a traditional folk dance that can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). It is also a Suzhou municipal ICH.

Pear syrup candy

Pear syrup candy, which is made with a dozen herbs, is a popular remedy for cough among the locals. The technique of making pear syrup candy is a Taicang ICH. 

Kites

Making kites usually consists of three steps: building a symmetric framework with bamboo, pasting a piece of paper or cloth on the framework and drawing on the paper or cloth.This technique is a Taicang ICH. 

Dried meat floss bone

Taicang dried meat floss bone is made with high-quality pork bones. The sweet and savory dish is a Taicang ICH.

Scissors and knives

Scissors and knives made in the Zhu Daquan workshop have a long history which can be traced back to the late Qing Dynasty (1636-1912). The craft of making scissors and knives is a Taicang ICH.
