Taicang Port surpassed Dalian Port in terms of container throughput, with 5.21 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) passing through in 2020, rising to ninth place in the country, according to the statistics released by the Ministry of Transport on Jan 21.

The container throughput of Taicang Port has led Jiangsu province for three consecutive years. It has also been the leading port along the Yangtze River for 11 consecutive years.

Taicang Port opened six new routes in 2020, including three offshore routes, one domestic trade route, and two routes of the Yangtze River branch. The total number of routes increased to 211.

Green channels were opened to transport more than 1.5 million tons of COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control materials, with 32,000 TEUs of goods transported to Hubei during the COVID-19 outbreak.

The average operation profit growth of 14 port logistics enterprises reached double digits. The enterprises assisted Taicang Port to bring in 45 material trading companies all year round, generating nearly 6 billion yuan ($927 million) in total revenue.

According to the development plan, Taicang Port will strive to achieve an annual container throughput of 10 million TEUs and 300 million tons of cargo throughput by the end of China's 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025).
