Taicang, a county-level city of Suzhou, Jiangsu province, received the title of National Civilized City in 2020, as announced at an award ceremony held in Beijing on Nov 20.

As one of the most important and influential awards for Chinese cities, the National Civilized City title honors cities which have performed well in terms of standard of living, social harmony, environmental preservation, as well as the manners and etiquette of residents.

Many citizens of Taicang have been recognized at all levels, from the national to the municipal, as role models for their benevolent acts. Volunteerism has become an integral part of the Taicang spirit.

The city has also consistently worked to improve basic infrastructure in order to enrich the lives of local residents in recent years.

Construction will soon be complete on a new 17,333-square-meter branch of the Taicang Art Museum, which will provide services such as exhibition, collection, conference, training, and cultural exchange.

On July 1, the Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Railway began operating, marking a milestone for Taicang in its efforts to become more closely connected to Shanghai.

In addition, Taicang's low crime rate played a role in it receiving the National Civilized City title. It is the only county-level city to receive the Chang'an Cup, which recognizes cities with the highest levels of security.

Over the past several years, Taicang has taken actions to further build a modern management system, making strong use of digital technology.
