Taicang's new household registration policy, which took effect on May 1, has attracted 3,528 new residents to the county-level city in Suzhou, Jiangsu province.
From May 1 to Aug 24, the talent inflow was 561 percent higher compared with the same period last year, and the number of applicants increased by 2,513 percent year on year.
"Taicang boasts a beautiful environment, convenient transportation, and a cluster of high-tech and foreign enterprises. Many of my friends and classmates have chosen to settle down in the city. Their experiences have helped me in my decision," said Wang Qing, who majored in international business at Xi'an Jiaotong University.
"The new policy removed barriers such as the need for a social security account, so postgraduates like me can settle down before hunting for a job," she said.
Guo Li, who studied German at the Hunan Institute of Engineering, said that Taicang is home to over 300 Germany enterprises and is a great place for her to realize her dreams.
Wu Jiabin, director of the human resource department of the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Entrepreneur College (Taicang), said the new policy has helped the campus to recruit skilled workers with a doctoral degree or above.
"Solving the household registration problem got rid of a lot of issues and gave people strong confidence in the city," she added.
According to the municipal human resources and social security bureau, the newly registered professionals are mainly engaged in electronic information, artificial intelligence, biological medicine, and headquarters economy.
