The Taicang Sino-German Dual Education Innovation and Development Forum took place in Taicang, Jiangsu province on Nov 12.

The forum was jointly hosted by the municipal government of Taicang and AHK Greater China to announce the opening of the Taicang Dual Education Institute and the establishment of two alliances that will integrate the vocational education resources of Jiading, Kunshan, and Taicang.

The Taicang Dual Education Institute will work to localize German's dual vocational education system and formulate a series of new standards that meet the needs of both Chinese students and the market.

The new alliances will work together to enroll students, recruit and train personnel, exchange resources, carry out educational reforms and academic research, and more.

"After over 20 years of development, Taicang is now home to over 320 German enterprises," said Wang Jianguo, mayor of Taicang, in a keynote speech.

He said Taicang has learned much from Sino-German cooperation and built a dual vocational education system that pairs market demand with classroom learning. Taicang will continue to integrate vocational and higher education, which will bring significant benefit to German enterprises in the city.

In 2001, Taicang became the first Chinese city to introduce a dual education system from Germany to train skilled workers for the manufacturing industry. The system offers courses combining company apprenticeships and vocational education.

To date, the local government, which has played a leading role in the training system and encouraging the participation of private educational companies, has set up 15 such training bases.

AHK Greater China is part of the German Chambers of Commerce Worldwide Network (AHK), which includes 140 offices in 92 countries. Its first Chinese office was opened in Taipei in 1981.
