Taicang scientist receives national women's title

Zhang Xumei, a scientist working in Taicang, Jiangsu province, has been honored with the title of National Pace Setter from the All-China Women's Federation, local media reported on March 8.

Zhang started her career in the city when she received her doctorate six years ago and now she is responsible for the land and fertilizer department of the city's agricultural technology promotion center.

Observing the color and growth of wheat in a bid to know about soil fertility is what constitutes most of her daily work.

Zhang said that as a agro-technician, she needs to frequent the farmland to check crops and to ensure the quality of cultivated land.

She is a pioneer of soil environmental quality category in China, and offers technical support for the local targeted protection and sustainable use of land.

Zhang has also piloted the restoration and management of arable soil in Taicang, the first of its kind in Jiangsu province and developed a system of restoration and management of arable soil applicable to the city.

In recent years, her work has been widely recognized and Zhang has received honorary titles from provincial and municipal governments.

Zhang will continue contributing to Taicang's agricultural development and the income growth of the city's farmers.
