Taicang plans to establish an aviation industry park worth 100 billion yuan ($14.5 billion) together with the Yangtze River Delta Research Institute, Taicang Daily reported on Jan 5.

The two sides expect to construct the industry park into an important scientific and innovation center of the aviation industry, manufacturing base and industrial tourism park in China's Yangtze River Delta region.

The to-be-built industry park will focus on core aviation sectors: intelligent manufacturing, airborne equipment, aero-engine and critical materials and their supporting industries, such as aviation industry-related tourism and aviation talent training.

The announcement was made at the launch ceremony of the Yangtze River Delta Research Institute.

The institute was jointly established by the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) in Xi'an, Northwest China's Shaanxi province and the Taicang municipal government.

Civil aviation is one of its six main research fields, with the five others being intelligent manufacturing, new materials, electronic information, satellite applications and transportation.

NPU, a national key university, specializes in education and research in the fields of materials, aerospace, navigation, engineering and physics, and is ranked 10th among China's engineering universities.
